The following is a history of the Lunde side of my family. Much of it was sent to me by my second cousin Erik Lunde in Norway. Before I start, a little about Norway. Farms have names, and in many cases the owner of the farm takes on the name of the farm as a last name. There is an area (community, county?) called Ringsaker where our relatives live. In the center of Ringsaker is the farm Samsal. North of Samsal, we find Lier, Lunde, Tretengen, Berg, Skoug. These are farms where our ancestors lived. The farm called Lunde is situated between Samsal and Lier/Berg. The farm Tretengen is close to Lier. Tretengen still belongs to the family. The farm Skoug is located in Brøttum. Brøttum is the northern part of Ringsaker community.

First a little about my Lunde cousin's in Norway. Erik and his family live on the only inhabited island on Mjøsa, the biggest sea in Norway inner land. The closest town to them is Hamar. The island is about 18 square kilometers, (about 4,000 acres). There are 600 inhabitants. There is one school and a bridge connecting to the mainland. Farming is the main occupation of the people living here. Also, there is an institution for feeble-minded. Erik's parents with help from the family bought a farm called Kjelsrud in August 1936. The farm was shabby, but with big efforts are made a good farm. His son, Kjell, runs the farm now.

Another second cousin (also named Erik Lunde) owns the Lunde farm. This farm has been in the family since the 1850's when Even Erikssen Lier bought the main part of the farm Lunde in 1852, and in 1858 bought the rest of the farm. He was the first man of our family to bear the name Lunde. Because Even did not have descendants he entered an agreement to sell the Lunde farm to his younger brother (our great-grandfather) Christian. From 1860 to 1870 they ran the farm together, then in 1870 Even sold the Lunde farm to Christian.

Now going deeper into our past. The first man we know as being in our family was Harald Klerk. He had another farm, Samsal, some 6 miles from Lunde. Our family was the owners of the farm Samsal for about 400 years. Almost all this time Samsal was possessed by nobility, from the beginning by Norwegian noblemen, but later mixed with Danish noblemen. Harald Klerk is supposed to have been born in the 1200's and died about 1320. Klerk was not a surname or family name, rather it means a man being able to write documents, and so he did, and from these we know him. One of Harald's sons was Brynjulf. He was the first man we know as the owner of Lier. His wife is thought to be the owner of the neighboring farm, Berg, because Brynjulf's two sons made a deal of their heritage. The result was that the one son had Lier, and the other had Berg. These two brothers became the scions for two branches of the family.

The Lier family has a very long history in the commune Ringsaker. They have been within the family since 1612 at least, and still it belongs to the family. Even before this time Lier belonged to the family, but for a period of about 80 years, from 1523 to 1612, there were probably other men owning the Lier farm. Lack of information makes this uncertain.
